By the third day of the Consumer
Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, many of the 95,000
attendees had the glazed look of somebody who’s been looking at
a computer screen too long. That’s only fitting, because the
unofficial theme of the annual gadget-thon was convergence—how
to bring computer technology into every locale and every
pastime. Accordingly, Microsoft’s area of the floor was laid
out like a house, showing how its technologies can find a place
anywhere in your home from the kitchen to the bedroom. But some
of the more interesting developments at CES were among the least
splashy. For instance, Sun Microsystems announced with
relatively little fanfare a consumer market alliance with Cisco
Systems Inc. to develop an open, standards-based architecture
for Internet home gateway systems. The integration of Sun’s Jini
communications technology into Cisco products will mean easy
interconnectivity between computers, phones, printers, faxes and
other Net-ready home devices. It will also mean the ability for
consumers to remotely manage the electronics in their homes
while away from home.
Not to be outdone, Microsoft previewed its Pocket PC at CES.
Previously known by the code name Rapier, Pocket PC is meant to
expand the functionality and accessibility of PDA, with an eye
on undoing the PDA’s reputation as a fancy-pants day planner. It
will do so with 32-bit microprocessors, expansion slots and an
abundance of core system memory. One perk of the unit is its
ability to gain 300 MB of storage by inserting a CompactFlash
memory card. All Pocket PCs will ship with Microsoft Reader and
Microsoft Media Player. |
